Flies are a serious nuisance for horses. More importantly, flies carry several diseases and so can impact the health of your horse. Prevention is a far better option than cure and so it is crucial to provide your horse with adequate fly protection. A fly rug or fly sheet represents an excellent investment.
Horseflies, Blowflies and Screwworms
Bites from horseflies are extremely painful as these unpleasant insects actually tear the flesh in order to feed on the horse’s blood. The flies may be carrying equine infectious anaemia, anthrax or contagious conjunctivitis. Their bites may also cause dermatitis, skin eruptions, lesions, abrasions, scabbing, fungal diseases and hair loss. The open wounds caused by bites are the perfect places for blowflies and screwworms to lay their eggs. When these hatch the larvae then feed on your horse’s tissues and this situation can be deadly.
Botflies and Gnats
Botflies favour horses as hosts for their eggs and will lay these in areas which horses are able to reach with their mouths. Horses can then ingest the eggs and larvae which will attach to the horse’s stomach wall. Gnat bites cause horses to toss their heads and to rub the affected area. These bites also contain a toxin which could cause cardiac arrest or respiratory depression.
Flies don’t have to bite to be a major problem. Houseflies are the perfect example as they can be serious irritants and may spread disease. They will feed on a horse’s eyes, nose and mouth secretions, infecting the horse with any diseases that they happen to be carrying.
Any species of Fly could also cause your horse to stomp and this behaviour increases the risk of injury and the loosening of shoes.
