Horse Fly Repellent
Fly sheets and fly masks will help to protect your horse from being pestered and bitten by flying insects but sometimes horses need a little extra help in the shape of fly repellent. Our extensive range of sprays, creams and gels provides the options you need including DEET-free choices.
Why Fly Protection?
Horses attract a variety of airborne flies and insects. Not only do these make life rather unpleasant, they can also lead to serious health issues. Horse flies and deer flies will bite both horses and riders and those bites are truly nasty!
From the Tapinidae family of insects, the females of these flies need a blood meal before they can reproduce and they get this from biting into flesh. They have impressively long mandibles which literally rip open the flesh and this is why their bites are so painful. Horses may also be afflicted by bites from gnats, black flies and bot flies.
Bites can result in horses contracting equine infectious anaemia, encephalomyelitis, worm infestation, sores, scabs, respiratory depression and conjunctivitis. An acute allergic reaction to insect saliva results in a condition called sweet itch. There is no cure for this unfortunate ailment and so it is crucial to protect horses from being bitten.
